Sustainable Fashion

In today's article, we will be talking about sustainable fashion and how you can build your very own sustainable wardrobe.

Let's start by discussing what sustainable fashion means and then we will move on to the list of practices adhering to which will make your wardrobe more sustainable.

  • Sustainable fashion is a broad term that covers the various aspects of producing, selling, and consuming clothes, shoes, and accessories in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way. It is a movement that aims to foster impactful change in the fashion system that will assist the world in moving towards greater ecological, integral, and social morals and values.

  • It also includes the knowledge of sustainable patterns of product consumption and use. What this implies is that sustainable fashion deals with fashion from the perspective of multiple stakeholders that not just include users and producers but all living species, and contemporary and future dwellers of earth.

  • Sustainability has become quite central in fashion nowadays but this has left many confused as to how to implement sustainable practices in our daily lives better. Especially with all the different terms and phrases being used regarding this topic.

Keeping this in mind, I have come up with a few sustainable practices you can implement in your daily life activities which will help you build your very own sustainable wardrobe.

1.Say no to impulse buying

First things first, you need to stop buying stuff just because they look appealing. You need to carefully select and choose from the best available options, after asking yourself essential questions. What I mean to say is that before you make any purchases, ask yourself if you are going to use that product on multiple occasions. What is the likelihood that you will get bored of it after a one-time use? Are the items that you are buying interchangeable and go with different outfits?

Keeping all of these factors in mind is very important and will help you select the best sustainable products for you. After all, this is going to be an investment with long-term usage and of course benefits.

2. Buy what you love and not what is trendy

We all tend to get carried away when it comes to fashion trends. But the thing about these trends is that they leave as quickly as they come and chances are once the trend washes away you will never use those products again. So my advice would be to Identify your style and stay true to it, fashion trends can wait. Stick to the types of clothes that you find yourself comfortable and confident in. This way, you will not make any purchases that you will regret in the future and this will also ensure that you use the products that you have brought for longer periods.

3. Quality over anything else

A crucial part of transforming your wardrobe into a sustainable one is to always prioritize quality. This is because good quality garments will last you for long durations of time. You should also consider going for natural fabrics like cotton, silk, linen, rayon, viscose, bamboo, etc. These fabrics are comfortable to wear and do not pose any danger to the environment.

4. Buy responsibly

Make sure to only buy from sustainable brands. Do a thorough research and then shortlist all the sustainable brands that match your style and fashion sense. Also, be aware of all those brands who use the tag of ‘sustainability to attract more customers, when in reality they never practice what they preach and advocate!

***Most importantly, remember to take it one step at a time. Understand that this is a process. You will eventually get the hang of things.

Hopefully implementing these practices will help you make the best sustainable choices for your wardrobe. Say goodbye to piles and piles of unforgotten stuff, together let us welcome a more responsible version of life!

Oh and make sure to stay determined and goal-oriented. You are doing an amazing job, helping our planet survive a little longer!
